So what stood out at LaGrange's
scrimmage at Spalding county Saturday night? Defense. You expected
something different?
The Grangers are always built around defense. So we saw more of the
same at this year's scrimmage. The only score they gave up was a
field goal set up by a Jaguar interception ran back inside
LaGrange's red zone. Even then the Granger defense forced Spalding
to go three and out and get the field goal. Someone told me "The
defense will only get better." They ain't bad now.
The Granger offense looked shaky, though. Rodney Tolbert threw two
interceptions. Jamius Gunsby, in with the first team after Rodney
took a hard hit, watched a snap go by while in the shotgun, creating
another turnover. Another fumble gave the first team offense four
turnovers in 18 minutes of game time. The running game looked good,
though. Ocie Salter is explosive and fast, Darren Hairston ran hard,
and Antwan Daniel showed great field vision while picking his holes
to run through. Even Gunsby ran hard on the second team, scrapping
for every yard while getting into the end zone.
The scrimmage was not broadcast, but Todd Willis and I got some work
in. I am in preseason form, but Todd was on his game. He said before
Pat Simmons' 39 yard field goal attempt that it was "just inside his
range." Simmons just did clear the crossbar with the kick. Well
done, Todd.
I'm looking forward to this season. From what I saw in the
scrimmage, there is a lot to look forward to.
